Tips for Convincing Your Teen Son That It’s Time to Go to the Dentist

As a family dentistry practice, we work with people of all ages. We have written blogs in the past that covered how to help your young child get to the dentist, we have covered how to remind adults to get to the dentist regularly, but one category has not been covered as much: how to convince a teen boy that he needs a regular dental cleaning and exam.

Determine Why He Does Not Want to Go to the Dentist

Teen boys are not always entirely forthcoming and he might not tell you outright if he is having fear or is worried about pain. Before you determine the best way to help him with his reluctance to go to the dentist, find out what it’s all about. It could be something as simple as the fact that his friends go to the same dentist and he doesn’t want to be seen with his parents. Whatever the reason, the sooner you determine what it is, the easier it will be to help him look forward to going to the dentist.

Teach Him How Important Oral Health Care Is

In some cases, teens might not realize just how important oral health care is. Describe the gum disease, lost teeth, and other issues they could have if they do not see the dentist regularly. If you have family members or close friends who have experienced these things, ask them to talk to your teen in an effort to get him to take it more seriously.

Remind Him of the Benefits to His Looks

The fact is that many teens are self-conscious. Reminding him that going to the dentist regularly is a great way to avoid ugly cavities can go a long way. Let him know that his dentist can remove surface stains and take care of issues before they become bigger issues. This might be enough to convince him that it is time to get to the dentist.

Pull the Parent Card

If you have discussed all of these factors with him and he still insists he does not want to go, then it is time to put your foot down. Tell him that it is a requirement. You can take him out to lunch beforehand, or promise him a treat afterward. If you pair the visit with something good, then it will increase the chances that he has positive memories of the dentist.

At California Dental Group we understand that not everyone looks forward to going to the dentist. We can take extra precautions to ensure that your teen is as comfortable as possible. Call us now at (800) 407-0161 to make an appointment.
