Summer Dental Care

There’s no debate that summer is one of the most favorite seasons. It’s a time when school is out for kids and people go on vacation. The last thing on everyone’s mind is his or her teeth and oral health. But it’s important that even when you’re relaxing on your trips or enjoying outdoor activities, you are aware of some simple tips to keep your smile healthy.

5 simple summer tips for a healthy smile

  1. Keep your regular brushing and flossing routine. During vacations, you may want to skip on regularly brushing and flossing your teeth. However, it’s crucial to continue to adequately clean between and around your teeth to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Remember to brush at least twice a day and floss once daily.
  2. Drink plenty of water. Summer is usually hot and drinking plenty of water will help you keep cool. Water is helpful in keeping your mouth moist throughout the day. It is also effective in washing away plaque causing bacteria and beneficial to keeping your breath fresh.
  3. Don’t chew on ice. The summer heat wave can be severe and drinking an ice-cold beverage during summer can be very refreshing. But, refrain from chewing on the ice. Ice or other hard substances are known to cause chips or damages to the teeth. Continuous munching on ice may also wear down your teeth’s enamel.
  4. Avoid sugary drinks and snacks. Beverages such as sodas, sweet teas, sports drinks, and lemonades have large amounts of sugar that can lead to tooth decay. Opt for water, unsweetened tea, plain sparkling water and diluted juice. Instead of potato chips or sugary snacks, select fresh fruits and vegetables to help scrub food build-up and stimulate saliva.
  5. Prepare an emergency dental care kit. Summer would not be summer without swimming and other sports or outdoor activities. Unfortunately, all these fun activities could result in dental injury. Be prepared by packing an emergency dental care kit. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, the kit should include a handkerchief, gauze, a small container with a lid, ibuprofen and the contact information of your dentist.
