One Study Shows that Gum Disease Can Increase a Postmenopausal Woman’s Chance of Breast Cancer

A new study out of the UK has some shocking and concerning information. Women are both postmenopausal and have periodontal disease, otherwise known was gum disease, have a much higher chance of developing breast cancer. In fact, this study showed that a woman with gum disease is 14% more likely to get a positive diagnosis for breast cancer.

The specifics of the link aren’t yet clear

While the study showed a clear link between gum disease and breast cancer in postmenopausal women, it’s not yet clear why this link exists. One doctor posits that it may be an issue where there’s a general inflammation in the body when a woman has breast cancer. In fact, numerous studies have shown a link between a variety of cancer types and chronic inflammation – and even a link between inflammation and other issues like strokes and heart disease.

Doctors agree that the next step is clear: studying gum disease and breast cancer in other populations. At this point, the question researchers seem most interested in is why postmenopausal women seem so much more likely to have gum disease and breast cancer in conjunction with each other. As researchers begin to understand the link, they’ll better understand what can be done.

The health risks of periodontal disease

While this is startling news for many, California dentists are not surprised. Why? Because periodontal disease has long been linked with a wide range of health conditions including diabetes, dementia, and the above described stroke and heart disease.

It’s easy to see that the health risks that come along with gum disease are not just limited to the mouth – there’s plenty of evidence that it can lead to very serious health issues. The problem is even worse when you consider how many people have gum disease. Estimates are as high as half the population with some form of gum disease and as many as 15% of adults with severe gum disease.
