Check Out These Foods That Can Naturally Whiten Your Teeth

July 2, 2016

Check Out These Foods That Can Naturally Whiten Your Teeth You probably know plenty about foods and beverages that can stain your teeth: wine, coffee, candy, etc. but did you know there are some foods that can actually help whiten your teeth? Of course, here at California Dental Group, we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out that your best shot is a professional teeth whitening, but eating these foods can help boost your results.

First of all: Don’t forget to brush and floss

Yes, there are foods that can help keep your teeth white but remember that your absolute best defense against aging or yellowing teeth is regular brushing and flossing. Doing so will also help you prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath.

Fruits and vegetables that can help whiten your teeth

Fruits with malic acid, like strawberries and apples, help remove stains from the surface of your teeth and can also help whiten enamel. Strawberries have ellagitannins too, which are essential antioxidants that can lower the number of stain-attracting bacteria in your mouth and can also help reduce inflammation of your gums.

Fruits and veggies with a high water content help increase saliva production, which helps wash away nasty bacteria in your mouth. Examples of high water content fruits and veggies include:

  • Celery
  • Pears
  • Carrots

Pears also have a high water content, plus they’re well-known to neutralize bacteria that causes odors, and are great for both saliva production and improving breath.

Bromelain is a compound that can help clean and reduce inflammation. It’s found in many stain-removing toothpastes but is found in just one food naturally: pineapple.

Foods that can help scrub your teeth clean

There are foods out there that are almost like little natural brushes, thanks to the fact that their texture is somewhat abrasive. They include:

  • Nuts
  • Apples
  • Broccoli
  • Seeds

Try to eat these foods in the afternoon. While they don’t take the place of a good brushing, they can be a great midday refresher. Plus, these foods all have other natural benefits. For example, broccoli is lots of iron of fiber, both of which are important to help lower inflammation in your mouth.

Dairy is great for your teeth

Milk, cheese, and other dairy product are chock full of calcium, which is as great for teeth as it is for bones. The interesting thing about dairy is that while it does contain plenty of calcium to help protect your enamel and prevent decay, it has several other proteins and minerals that do the same thing. Drinking dairy is also a great choice instead of beverages that can stain the teeth like coffee or wine.
