When, Why, and How to Correct an Overbite

August 12, 2015

Everything you need to know about correcting an overbite with orthodontics.

When, Why, and How to Correct an OverbiteAn overbite is a relatively common type of “malocclusion” or tooth misalignment in which the upper teeth protrude too far over the bottom teeth. If you or your child has an overbite, the following information will help you understand your options for improving your smile.

Why Correct an Overbite

The most common reason to correct an overbite is that it simply is not attractive. However, if you need more convincing, consider that straighter teeth actually have health benefits over crooked, protruding ones.

  • First of all, if the teeth are crooked or overlapping as well as protruding, straightening them will make it easier to keep them clean.
  • Secondly, correcting an overbite can improve the alignment of your upper and lower teeth when you bite. This will prevent issues with jaw pain or tooth wear that could otherwise result from a bad bite.
  • Finally, in the case of a severe overbite, you may actually be at increased risk of breaking your teeth. Correcting the overbite will pull the protruding teeth closer to the bottom teeth and help support them against breakage in the event of a blow to the face.

How an Orthodontist Can Help

Most overbites can be corrected with orthodontic treatment alone. However, in some severe cases, surgery may be needed first in order to correct the formation of the upper jaw or extract some teeth to facilitate realignment.

Metal braces are the traditional way to correct an overbite. Often, headgear is necessary to facilitate the movement of the protruding teeth back into a more normal position.

Invisalign does have potential to be used to correct overbites. While it cannot achieve the same results as traditional braces in every case, it can correct many types of overbites with great success. Using traditional braces for the preliminary phase of treatment to handle the more difficult tooth movements, and then switching to Invisalign for the remainder of treatment, is certainly a possibility.

When Is the Best Time to Get Braces for an Overbite?

Technically, an overbite can be corrected at any time, so it is certainly possible for you to get adult braces to correct your overbite. However, it is easier to manipulate a growing jaw than an adult one, so most orthodontists recommend correcting the overbite in the early teen years. Treatment is typically slower and more painful for adults than for kids and teens.
