Toothache Remedies

June 21, 2015

The only lasting remedy for toothache pain is professional dental treatment.

Suffering from a toothache? There is actually just one thing you need to do in order to find lasting relief:

Call your dentist.

toothache remediesYour dentist will be able to identify the cause of your pain and recommend the necessary treatment, such as:

  • Fillings: The best remedy for a toothache caused by tooth decay is simply to remove the decayed tooth material, clean the cavity, and fill it with a silver amalgam or white composite material.
  • Root Canal: If your toothache is caused by extensive decay or by nerve damage, a root canal may be necessary to stop the pain. The chief benefit of a root canal is that is gets rid of all the painful, infected material inside the tooth and its roots without actually requiring extraction. Instead the cleaned tooth will be capped with a crown that you can use just like a natural tooth.
  • Extraction: If there is very little healthy tooth structure left, your dentist may have to extract the tooth in order to relieve your toothache pain.
  • Gingival Graft: In some cases, toothache may be caused by receding gums exposing the roots of the teeth. When this happens, a surgical procedure may be needed to correct the receding gum line.
  • Products for Sensitive Teeth: If your dental pain is caused by sensitive teeth, you are in luck because this toothache remedy is the easiest of all. Your dentist will simply recommend a special toothpaste to help your teeth rebuild themselves naturally and thereby reduce sensitivity.

Best Toothache Remedies for Before and After Dental Treatment

Even if you are able to get an appointment with your dentist right away, you will still probably want to do something to relieve or at least reduce your current toothache pain. You may need help with pain relief during the healing process after your dental treatment as well.

Remember:

The vast majority of home toothache remedies simply do not work! Stick with these dentist-approved toothache pain remedies instead:

  • Ice: The simplest, safest toothache remedy is simply to apply ice to the area to numb the pain.
  • Salt Water: Rinsing your mouth with salt water for about 30 seconds may be helpful if your toothache pain is caused by bacteria.
  • Aspirin: Taking an aspirin can help reduce pain and inflammation around the problem area. However, you should not take aspirin after an extraction or other oral surgery because it can inhibit blood clotting.
  • Ibuprofen: This painkiller can be used as an effective toothache pain remedy before or after dental treatment.
  • Acetaminophen/Paracetamol: These medications work by blocking pain messages in the brain, but do not help reduce inflammation.
