Tips for Overcoming that Annoying Dental Anxiety

July 21, 2014

Dental AnxietyThe thought of setting up a dentist appointment, getting a cavity filled, or even sitting through a routine dental cleaning is met with anxiety for a majority of the nation’s population. For some, it is caused by a lack of understanding about what will take place during a certain procedure. For others, it could be fear of the unknown. Then again, it may simply be nervousness about discomfort and pain. Fortunately, there are measures that can be taken to combat this problem and reduce the amount of fear a person may be feeling.

Set Up Your Appointment . . . The Right Way

There are a couple of ways of going about setting up and planning the initial appointment that can contribute to a more relaxed feeling and demeanor.

  1. Set your appointment for a day when you aren’t between things. For example, scheduling your appointment when you are in a rush and squeezing it between your children’s activities or your lunch break at work is not smart. Rather, schedule it on a day when you have plenty of time to go to your appointment without rushing or stressing.
  2. Arrive on time with ten minutes to spare. Allowing yourself a few extra minutes to sit and relax before your name is called is an excellent way to calm your nerves.

Write Down Your Questions . . . And Actually Ask Them

Ask anyone if they know exactly what happens at the dentist. Unless the people you ask are dental professionals, chances are you will get a vague description. The dentists you visit are more than happy to take time to answer your questions, especially if doing so will calm your nerves and bring you comfort. This is especially important to do if you are getting an unconventional treatment such as dental implants or cosmetic procedures. Having an idea of what to expect may be just what you need to feel better about your visit.

Involve Things You Enjoy Throughout Your Visit

Have you ever thought about listening to music while you get your teeth cleaned or listening to a good book? Many dental offices have MP3 players or similar devices for patients to use. However, you can also bring your own gadgets to use if it helps you to remain calm and relaxed.

Another suggestion you may consider is thinking about a happy place you enjoy such as the beach or perhaps getting ready to ski the snowy slopes of Aspen, Colorado. Perhaps you may choose to daydream about that delicious ice-cream cone you are going to treat yourself with after everything is over.
