How To Select a Toothbrush

Toothbrushes come in many colors, shapes, and styles. There are even electric or battery powered toothbrush options available now. You may have not given it a second thought on deciding on a toothbrush for you. But it’s actually critical to make sure that you find the best toothbrush for you. You should replace your toothbrush as soon as it begins to show wear, or every three months, which ever comes first. It’s important to be mindful that a toothbrush with worn out bristles can damage gum tissues. It’s also recommended to change your toothbrush after you’ve had a cold, to avoid any type of reinfection.

What to look for in a toothbrush

  1. Select a toothbrush with soft bristles. There are different styles of bristles, such as, rippled, flat or trimmed to a dome shape. Using soft bristles will allow for a gentle scrub on your teeth and gums. Brushing with stiff bristles can be tough on teeth and gums and can lead to teeth sensitivity.
  2. Find the right toothbrush head. Some toothbrush head may be too large or wide, tapered or rectangular. Every mouth is different and choosing the right toothbrush head shape will make brushing more comfortable for you.
  3. Consider buying a known brand named toothbrush. An unknown named toothbrush can be cheap. But a toothbrush based on safety and efficacy is more likely from a well-known and reputable manufacturer. Cheap toothbrushes can be made from inferior or even unsafe materials.
  4. Ensure the right-sized toothbrush for family members. Younger family members, small children, and babies have little mouths and will need smaller toothbrushes than adult versions. In small children, toothbrush head should be small to fit their mouths and a large handle for an easier grip for tiny hands.
  5. Try a powered toothbrush. You may be a devoted manual toothbrush user, but consider trying a powered toothbrush. Manual toothbrushes may be difficult for some people to use for people with limited manual dexterity. A powered toothbrush may be easier and even more comfortable to use. New powered toothbrushes may be a fun way to get kids who avoid brushing to start brushing.

Remember that the best toothbrush is the toothbrush that you actually use. This means that the toothbrush should fit comfortably, not only in your hand, but in your mouth too. The toothbrush should also comfortably be able to reach and brush every tooth surface.
