Four Reasons it is Essential to Floss on a Daily Basis

Most people have heard over and over again that they should brush at least twice per day and floss daily. However, most people do not follow these guidelines on a consistent basis. At California Dental Group, we believe that this is partially due to the fact that they do not realize just how important it is. Keep reading to learn four reasons that it is essential and then book an appointment with California Dental Group at (800) 407-0161 if it has been more than six months since your last dental visit.

  1. It Gets Rid of Aggravating Pieces of Food That Are Stuck
  2. Skip the toothpick and pick up your floss the next time you get food stuck between your teeth. You likely know that very uncomfortable feeling of having food stuck in your teeth and it will just not come out. If you carry floss in your purse or pocket, you can discretely head to the bathroom to get rid of it.

  3. You Won’t Have Food Rotting Between Your Teeth
  4. What do you think happens to the food that is stuck between your teeth if you do not get rid of it? Unfortunately, it begins to rot. This can then introduce bacteria into your mouth that is bad for both your teeth and your gums. This rotting food can start to smell bad, which leads to bad breath. Remember, too, that not all the food stuck between your teeth is visible – flossing gets rid of even the hidden pieces.

  5. Brushing Can’t Do It All
  6. Even if a person brushes for the recommended two minutes at least twice per day, they cannot get everything between the teeth. Now, remember that most people do not brush as long as they should or the right way. This can leave even more food behind. If you make a point of flossing daily, you will be ensuring that your brushing has the maximum impact too.

  7. Flossing Daily Can Help Lower Your Chance of Suffering from Gum Disease
  8. According to the CDC, about half of Americans have gum disease. Left untreated, gum disease can lead to serious issues that include tooth and bone loss. Brushing regularly and visiting your dentist twice per year are important steps to reduce your chance of developing gum disease, but so is flossing.
