Discover the Three Most Common Causes of Tooth Loss in Adults

No adult wants to lose a tooth yet it happens all too frequently. Many do not realize the most common potential causes of this issue. You can learn three of the most common causes of tooth loss in adults and then contact California Dental Group at 800-407-0161 to learn more or to get answers to your questions.

  1. Decay
  2. The leading cause of tooth loss for adults is decay. When it gets severe and is not treated, it can lead to your teeth disintegration. This happens over years of neglect and missed dental cleanings. For example, an untreated cavity could result in the pulp of the tooth becoming infected. As the infection gets worse, an abscess can develop under or around the root of the tooth. This requires major intervention (generally a root canal) to stop the infection and save the tooth.

  3. Gum Disease
  4. One of the major causes of tooth loss in adults is periodontitis, better known by many as gum disease. Mild gum disease results in red, inflamed gums that may or may not be painful. As it advances, your gums may start separating from the teeth. Eventually the bone structure will be weakened. If this continues, then the teeth can become loose and eventually fall out.

The good news is that when it is caught early, gum disease can often be reversed by making lifestyle changes. As it advances, it gets more difficult – though not impossible – to treat. If your gums hurt, bleed excessively, or are swollen, or if you have loose teeth, you should see your dentist right away.

  5. Injury
  6. There are two main ways injury can cause tooth loss. First, is the sudden injury that may come from being struck in the face, being in an accident, or during a sporting event. Second, a person can lose their teeth after repeated small trauma, such as nighttime tooth grinding. If you suffer an injury to your tooth, the best way to increase your chances of keeping it is to get help right away. If there is no root damage then we may be able to keep you from losing it permanently. Otherwise, we can discuss replacement options such as implants and bridges.
