Digital Impressions Make Dental Implants Easier

Learn how our iTero digital scanner will improve the experience of getting your dental implants.

Digital Impressions Make Dental Implants EasierWhen choosing a dentist to guide you through the dental implant process, there are many factors to consider. For example, you will obviously want to know about the dentist’s experience with implants. How extensive is their training and education in implantology? Have they placed hundreds of implants, or just a handful? Do they perform the oral surgery for placement of your implant pegs themselves, or refer you to an oral surgeon? What kind of follow up care can you expect?

All of these are of course important questions to answer.

However, there is another important area to consider that is often overlooked by patients:

How will the crowns for the implants get made?

Dental implants consist of a titanium implant peg topped with a crown. The crowns must be custom-made to fit your mouth. This means the dentist must have some means of measuring the available space, designing a well-fitting replacement tooth, and communicating these specs to the lab that will be creating the finished implant crown.

At California Dental Group, we use the latest digital technology (the iTero Scanner) to order dental implant crowns for our patients. This improves the patient experience in many ways.

Top 3 Benefits of Digital Impressions for Implant Crowns

  • Comfort: Traditional methods of ordering crowns involved filling bulky, uncomfortable trays with messy, strange-tasting compounds so that a physical impression could be made. This mold was then used to help produce the crown. With the iTero digital scanner, no molds are necessary. Instead, the dentist simply moves the scanning wand over the patient’s teeth to capture digital images of their teeth. This is obviously vastly more comfortable than taking a physical impression.
  • Quality: The iTero scanner takes 1,000 snapshots per minute to create a highly detailed and precise 3-D computer model of the patient’s teeth. With higher-quality data to work with, the dental lab is able to produce a higher-quality crown that will fit perfectly the first time. With traditional impressions, there is the risk of having to re-order the crown or adjust the fit.
  • Speed: Digital specs can be sent to the dental lab instantly. This creates a head start on the turn around time for producing the crowns and ensures your implant crowns are ready to place as soon as your gums have healed.
