Dealing with Bad Breath? Learn Three Potential Reasons and What to Do About Them

No one wants to be a person that has bad breath, yet there are millions of people who do. So many people are worried about bad breath that people in the United States spend upwards of $10 billion on oral care products each year. Some of that is for toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other products to fight cavities and help you smile, but most of those products can help improve your breath too.

Everyone has bad breath once in a while, but if you find that you are constantly covering your mouth due to bad breath (or the worry about bad breath), then you should contact your California dentist to find out what could be going on. In the meantime, see if any of these three common reasons for bad breath is applicable to you.

  1. Acid Reflux
  2. Due to a decrease in the quality of the average American’s diet, acid reflux has become a more common issue in recent years. Coupled with a bad diet, those who are over their ideal weight are also more likely to suffer acid reflux. This causes acid to rise up your throat, and it can leave a residue behind that is very foul-smelling. If you regularly have heartburn or feel sick after meals, you could be dealing with reflux.

  3. Failure to Brush and Floss Properly
  4. In a perfect world, people would brush at least twice per day for at least two minutes. They would floss at least once per day. The world is not perfect, and many people do not follow perfect oral hygiene habits at home. If you fail to do so, then you should know that you will be much more likely to have bad breath than if you prioritized your home oral health care.

  5. You Use Tobacco Products
  6. Most people realize that using tobacco can give them bad breath, but they often think that popping a breath mint or slugging with mouthwash can help remove this bad breath. That is not necessarily the case. Tobacco can get into your pores, and your entire body and your clothes will smell like tobacco. Smoking and other forms of tobacco use can also stain your teeth, cause you to lose your teeth, resulting in gum inflammation, and even lead to bone loss.
