Are You Worried About Periodontitis? Look Out for These Four Common Symptoms

If you have heard about the seriousness of periodontitis, then you are likely looking for ways to determine if you might have it and how you can handle it. Keep reading to learn four common symptoms of it and then contact California Dental Group at (800) 407-0161 if you would like to make an appointment with a dentist for a thorough dental cleaning and exam.

  1. Your Gums Are Bleeding
  2. The first sign of gingivitis (which is the least serious type of gum disease) is gums that bleed. As is true of the rest of your body, if your gums are bleeding, it means that something is injured. When bacteria gets in and essentially eats your gums, they cause open wounds that bleed when you brush them. As gum disease gets worse, the bleeding can occur at any time, even when you are not brushing.

  3. Your Gums Are Receding
  4. Gingivitis can essentially eat away at your gums. Your gums are what keep your teeth in place. As you might expect, as you start to develop gum disease, you will see that your teeth suddenly seem longer or taller. This is because the gum tissue around your teeth has died – and it will only get worse until you get treatment for the issue.

  5. Constant Bad Breath
  6. If you have chronic bad breath, there are a few reasons that could be true. However, this condition is very often the result of gum disease. The same bacteria that is causing the gum disease is also decaying your teeth. When this happens, it can make your breath smell terrible.

  7. You Have Loose Teeth or Have Lost a Tooth
  8. If you start to notice that your teeth are loose when you brush or floss, this is a sign that you could be dealing with gum disease. In fact, if you have not recently suffered a trauma, such as being hit in the face with a baseball, and your adult tooth becomes loose, this is a serious issue that should lead you to contact your dentist right away.

If it gets to the point that you actually lose a tooth, this is a dental emergency. Keep the tooth in your mouth between your cheek and jaw if possible. If that is not possible, put it in a glass of milk and bring it to your appointment. These steps can help preserve the tooth, and we may be able to replace it.
