6 Things You Should Know if You’re Getting Oral Surgery

Oral surgery may be suggested for a variety of issues and when you’re working with California Dental Group, there’s one thing you can count on: We will go over everything with you so that you feel as comfortable as possible. Read on to learn six things you should know before you move forward and then contact us at (800) 407-0161 with any additional questions or to set up your appointment.

  1. There may be other options

  2. One of the most important things to know about oral surgery is that it’s rarely the only option. Sometimes it is, for example if you have an impacted wisdom tooth, but in other situations there are very often several possible solutions. Make sure you’re talking to your dentist and that they’re being clear with you about every possible option. It may be that oral surgery is the right choice for you, but we believe you should be able to make your own informed decision.

  3. You have a right to ask any and all questions you have

  4. You’re not an expert in dental procedures – we are. That’s why we’re always here to answer your questions. Too often, clients are afraid to ask the tough questions for fear of looking ignorant. You can always ask your dentist at California Dental Group for as much information as you need. You might ask how many visits you’ll need in total, why we think it’s the best option, what sorts of complications there may be, what it will cost, etc.

  5. Your dentist needs the most updated records possible

  6. Before your oral surgeon begins, they’re going to need to make sure they have the most up to date information on you. This includes the medications you’re taking, your emergency contact, your address and phone number, etc. Even if you’ve recently provided this information, your surgeon will need to double check it to avoid any complications.

  7. You should always be honest with your surgeon

  8. When your oral surgeon numbs your mouth and asks you if you can feel their pushing or pinching, you should always be honest. In some cases, clients simply want to get the surgery over as quickly as possible, or perhaps they don’t want to feel like a bother. Whatever your reason is, trust us – this is the time to be honest.

  9. You will need to plan time to rest

  10. No matter what type of oral surgery you need, whether a wisdom tooth extraction, dental implant, or something else entirely, it’s essential that you have time to rest your mouth after the surgery. The amount of time you need will depend on the type of surgery you need and how it goes. We will always give you post-operation instructions. Please follow them closely!

  11. Don’t hesitate to call your dentist if you have continuing issues

  12. If your wound is expected to heal in a few days and it’s still causing you trouble a week later, or if your pain level seems to be getting worse – or you have any issues at all after your surgery – it’s always best to call your dentist. It may be something we can instruct you on how to handle over the phone or we may ask you to come to one of our convenient offices. Regardless, there’s no reason to live in pain – call California Dental Group at (800) 407-0161 right away.
