5 Reasons You May Need to Have Dental X-Rays at Your Appointment

It is not uncommon to fear the dentist. Some people are afraid of the sound of a drill while others don’t like the x-ray machine. We know that being at the dentist can be uncomfortable but we hope you can understand that dental x-rays are such a useful tool to help us ensure your teeth are healthy. They are a preventative and analytic measure that can help us keep your teeth in good shape and prevent future issues.

That said, this does not necessarily make you feel better. At California Dental Group we believe in empowering our patients with information. This is why we are here today to offer five reasons that it may be necessary for you to get new x-rays. To discuss other options with us, or to make an appointment, contact us at (800) 407-0161.

  1. You’re seeing a new dentist
  2. If you have just started seeing a new dentist then you can assume they are going to take x-rays. It is the best way for them to get a thorough picture about what is happening with your teeth. If they have never seen you or your teeth before, then they need x-rays. If you have seen another dentist within the last six months to a year, then it may be possible to have previous x-rays transferred to your new dentist.

  3. You haven’t had x-rays recently
  4. If you have x-rays but they are not recent, then it is likely you will need them done again. Why? Because many dental issues can get worse quickly. If your dentist is working with you to fix something like tooth decay or gum disease, then they will likely want to get x-rays to see how the treatment is progressing.

  5. You’re a cigarette smoker
  6. It is not a surprise to most smokers that their habit brings many health risks. However, many don’t realize that tobacco use can increase the chances of oral cancer. It can also speed up tooth decay and make a person more likely to have gum disease.

  7. You have had work done in the past
  8. If you have numerous filings or crowns in your mouth then it may be difficult for the dentist to see under your filings. As a result, they may need x-rays to see what is going on underneath.

  9. You have gum disease
  10. Gum disease is very common. The most common form is gingivitis, which is in the beginning stages. Periodontitis is a more serious version that can lead to serious consequences including tooth loss. If you have advanced gum disease then you can expect your dentist to take x-rays more often than they otherwise would.

If you have fear or apprehension about visiting the dentist then you will be glad to know that California Dental Group works tirelessly to find solutions for our patients. Call us at (800) 407-0161 today and we can discuss strategies to help you feel more comfortable.
