When Should Your Child First Visit a Dentist?

March 20, 2019

When Should Your Child First Visit a Dentist?New parents are often unsure of when to take a child to their first dental visit.  Here, we discuss when the optimal time is for you to take your child to their first visit with a dentist and what to expect during the first appointment.

Timing of Visit

A child’s first visit to the dentist should be about 6 months after their first tooth erupts in the mouth, according to the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.  The first visit should take place by 1 year old and no later than 2 years of age.  Waiting longer than 2 years will increase a child’s risk of plaque buildup and cavities.  Caring for your child’s developing teeth is important because the permanent teeth are developing under the primary ones.  After the first visit, a child should visit every 6 months.

Expectations During Appointment

The first dental appointment for your child will familiarize the child with the staff and environment.  A dentist will check to see that everything in your child’s mouth is developing normally.  You will be seated in the dental chair with your child seated on your lap, if your child is not able to sit alone.  The dentist will make sure your child’s jaw and teeth are appropriately developing, look for teeth decay and discoloration, check for any mouth injuries, and discuss good oral hygiene with you as the parent.  A child’s teeth should be brushed as soon as they emerge and a toothpaste with fluoride should be used after 6 months of age.

Tips For a Great First Visit

To have a great first dental visit for your child, follow these steps:

  1. Schedule the appointment at a time when your child is well rested and cooperative.
  2. Ask to complete necessary patient forms ahead of time, before the scheduled visit.
  3. Share with your child what is going to happen during the visit by reading books or watching videos about first dental visits.
  4. Prepare a list of questions you would like to ask the dentist during the visit about your child’s teeth health.
  5. Feed your child a light meal and brush their teeth before the visit so they won’t be hungry during the appointment.
  6. Pack some snacks for after the visit as a reward.
  7. Work with the dentist to clam your child if your child becomes upset during the visit.
