Three Reasons You Might Need a Root Canal: Get the Facts

Last week we discussed the truth about root canals – that they are not nearly as painful or uncomfortable as many people believe they are. This week we are going to discuss root canals even further to show you three reasons a person might need a root canal. Read on to learn about them and then contact California Dental Group at (800) 407-0161 if you are ready for a cleaning and exam.

  1. You Have Missed Dental Appointments for Years
  2. If you are sitting at home, wondering if there are issues going on in your mouth that could result in the need for a root canal, the first question you should ask yourself is how long it has been since you last went to the dentist. Root canal therapy is often a last-ditch effort to save a tooth. If it has been ten years since you were last at the dentist, then it is not at all unlikely that you should have serious dental issues. If they are serious enough, then you might need a root canal.

  3. You Have a Sensitive Tooth
  4. If you have a sensitive tooth, it is important to know that there is a reason for it. Many people just assume that everyone has one or two sensitive teeth or that it is normal to get sensitive teeth after a certain amount of time. This is false. There is nothing inevitable about sensitive teeth. If you have one, then that is a sign that there is an issue with damaged tissue and that could go all the way to the root. If it does, then root canal therapy could be the right treatment.

  5. You Have an Abscessed Tooth
  6. If you do not care for your teeth correctly, eventually, the inside tissue (known as the pulp) can die. When it does, it is replaced with a pocket that is full of pus and ends up at the end of the root. This is known as an abscess and it is essential that it is treated right away. If it is not, then the abscess can continue to grow, infect the bone, and eventually kill the root of the tooth. Rarely, a person can die from this infection if it is not treated with a root canal.
