The Causes and Treatment for Painful Wisdom Teeth

Most people have heard the term wisdom teeth. This term actually applies to the third molars. As the name implies, the third molars are a set of molars – the third – and they grow in both the upper and the lower jaw. For most people, wisdom teeth come in later than the rest of their adult teeth. In fact, they generally come in between the ages of 17 and 25. Unfortunately, the wisdom teeth often cause pain.

If you are having pain in your wisdom teeth then you need to speak to your dentist. Today we are going to cover some of the symptoms, causes, and treatments for pain in the wisdom teeth. Contact California Dental Group at (800) 407-0161 to make an appointment with a dentist.

Symptoms of wisdom teeth growing in

There are a number of symptoms of wisdom teeth coming in. Generally there will be some amount of pain or tenderness in the gums, which can range very slight to sever. It is also common for the gums to be swollen or irritated, and for there to be pain or pressure in the jaw.

If you are experiencing these or other symptoms of your wisdom teeth coming in, then you can give us a call for advice on how to treat it. For minor pain, an over the counter pain medication may be enough. For more serious issues, we will likely ask you to come in for a dental exam so we can be sure your wisdom teeth are coming in correctly. If they are coming in normally then they will likely not need to be extracted.

Wisdom teeth pain

It is common for a person to have mild pain or tenderness when the wisdom teeth come in. This is the same process that a baby goes through when they get a new tooth. Cold compresses and oral gels can be helpful for minor pain.

If you are experiencing significant pain or you develop a fever then you should contact your dentist right away. Either of these situations are symptoms of infection or impaction of the wisdom teeth. An impacted wisdom tooth is one that does not have enough room to grow. Typically this is due to being blocked by other molars. An impacted wisdom tooth is very painful and only your dentist can confirm that it is impacted via x-ray.

If you do have an impacted wisdom tooth then extraction is likely the best way to stop the pain, prevent or cure infection, and prevent damage to other teeth. Wisdom tooth extraction is done by an oral surgeon who specializes in this particular procedure. At California Dental Group we have a staff of experienced dental professionals – including oral surgeons. Call us at (800) 407-0161 now to make an appointment.
