If You Suffer from These Common Gum Problems Then You May Have Gum Disease

Ensuring the health of your gums is one of the most important parts of oral health. If you have gum issues then there’s a good chance you have gum disease. The best way to combat gum disease is to find it early. This is why we recommend dental cleanings and exams twice a year. We also recommend that if you experience any of the following gum problems, you contact California Dental Group at (800) 407-0161 to make a dentist appointment.

Bleeding gums often indicate unhealthy gums

If you’ve noticed that your gums have started bleeding when you floss or brush, then you may have gum issues. If you haven’t been flossing then we recommend you start. If you’re not brushing twice a day for at least two minutes then we recommend you begin doing so. If you do, and the bleeding continues, then you need to see your dentist because infection is likely.

Discolored gums

Heathy gums should be light pink. If your gums are instead bright red or otherwise look enflamed then you may be suffering from an infection or even gum disease. You can follow the same advice for bleeding gums: Brush and floss regularly. Once again, if improving your at-home oral hygiene regiment doesn’t help, you should contact a dentist.

Swollen gums

Swelling is often accompanied by other dental issues, including both of the issues listed above: Bleeding and discoloration. If your gums are painful and swollen then we recommend getting to the dentist sooner rather than later. Depending on the cause of the swelling, we may be able to prescribe a mouthwash or other medication that can take care of the cause of the swelling.

Your gum line is receding

Every time you visit your dentist, they will look at your gum line. If they notice that it’s receding over time then this is a good indicator that you have gum disease. Not seeing a dentist about your receding gum line could lead to serious issues including tooth loss.

Bad breath that won’t go away

Everyone has bad breath once in a while, whether it’s after they ate garlic or perhaps when they’ve had too much coffee to drink. However, if you regularly have bad breath, even though you’re brushing and flossing when you should, then there’s likely something going on. Once again, we recommend first trying to brush and floss more often but if that doesn’t work, then it’s time to contact the dentist.
