Special Dental Advice for Men During Men’s Health Month

June 18, 2015

Promote your overall health by visiting California Dental Group this month.

Special Dental Advice for Men During Men’s Health MonthJune isn’t just for celebrating dads with Father’s Day. All month long, communities across the nation celebrate all men as part of Men’s Health Month. This event is focused on promoting awareness of the many preventable health problems that affect men, so that men can get the treatment they need to stay healthy and continue enjoying a high quality of life.

Considering that oral health has some major links to overall health, it’s only natural that we celebrate Men’s Health Month here at California Dental Group with some special dental advice for men.

Get an Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancers may start out small, but they have the potential to spread very rapidly and become deadly. In fact, undiagnosed oral cancer has a higher death rate than many other types of cancer including testicular cancer. Statistics show that men are at particularly high risk of developing an oral cancer, especially if they are of African-American descent or are over age 45.

The good news is that with early detection, oral cancer is very treatable. Between 80 and 90 percent of patients who get their cancers diagnosed and treated early will survive.

Your dentist is your first line of defense against oral cancer. During Men’s Health Month, California Dental Group is offering free oral cancer screenings on Mondays at all our offices.

Schedule a Dental Cleaning & Exam

Some surveys have suggested that men are more likely to neglect their oral health than women. In particular, men may be tempted to forgo preventative dental care and only visit the dentist when they have dental pain or some other problem.

Taking this approach to dental care isn’t just bad for your teeth; it can also put your overall health at risk. This is especially true if you have diabetes, as gum disease and blood sugar control problems can make one another worse.

We urge you to schedule a professional dental cleaning & exam at California Dental Group at least once per year so that our gentle hygienists can clean your teeth and our expert dentists can check for signs of dental problems and treat these problems before they become too painful.

Protect Against Tooth Loss

When you crunch the numbers on male oral hygiene and tooth loss, you find that the average man brushes his teeth less than twice per day and will lose at least 5 teeth by the time he turns 72.

Considering the many negative consequences of losing a tooth, it is highly recommended to do everything in your power to prevent this possibility. Specific recommendations include:

  • Brush twice a day
  • Floss every day
  • Use a fluoride toothpaste to help prevent and repair minor tooth decay
  • Visit the dentist for professional cleanings
  • Control gum disease
  • Get treatment for drymouth to help prevent cavities
  • Wear a mouthguard while playing contact sports, biking, or riding a motorcycle
