Some Reasons Why You Gums May Hurt

The gums or gingiva are the soft tissue inside your mouth that holds your teeth in place. Your gums help seal the deep bone structure of your teeth to keep them healthy. The gums are a special type of tissue that binds very tight to the bone structure that your teeth sit on. When the gum tissue becomes diseased or infected, this can cause severe pain or cause you to lose your teeth. Here are the most common gum problems.

  1. Swollen and Bleeding Gums
  2. Swollen and bleeding gums is a good indication of gingivitis at an early stage of gum disease. Normal healthy gums may bleed when you brush or floss. If you notice that your gums are always swollen and bleed when you brush, you should make an appointment to see a dentist. If left unchecked, gingivitis can progress to a more severe and irreversible form of gum disease call periodontitis. Periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss.

  3. Shrinking Gum Line
  4. If you have noticed that your teeth may be getting longer, it is a likely sign that the gum line that surrounds the tooth is wearing away. There are many reasons why gums can recede. A common reason for receiving gum line is caused by periodontal disease. The bacteria producing toxins between the gum and teeth can destroy the healthy soft gum tissue. Another factor may be the result of you brushing your teeth too hard, causing your tooth enamel to wear and the gums to recede prematurely.

  5. Wiggly and Misaligned Teeth
  6. If your teeth are wiggly or misaligned, this may be an indication that periodontal disease has advanced. The bone structure that holds your tooth is weakening. This can change the way your teeth fit together when you bite, causing pain and gum irritation.

  7. Abscess Tooth
  8. When a cavity has reached the root of your tooth, this irritates the root causing inflammation. Some abscessed teeth can cause the gums to swell. You may need a root canal to remove the infection.

  9. Changing Hormones
  10. For some women, as they age, changing hormone levels can affect the gums. Shifting hormone levels can change the color of your gums, increase sensitivity, or cause the gum to hurt. In young children, as their teeth start to emerge, the gums may become swollen and tender.
