Skipping a Visit to the Dentist Can Be More Detrimental Than You Think

You may or may not be surprised by the fact that as many as 15% of Americans say that they’ve avoided going to the dentist because they’re afraid. The truth is simple: No one likes going to the dentist – yet we like the results we get from the dentist. At California Dental Group, we understand how serious this fear can be. That said, we want to make sure that you understand the very serious risk you’re taking when you skip your appointment.

You significantly increase your chance of tooth decay

Brushing and flossing regularly at home is important. That said, it’s not enough. During a typical dental cleaning and exam, your dentist will get rid of food particles that can lead to plaque. This cleaning also allows us to get rid of plaque and to ensure that your teeth are as clean as possible. No matter how well you brush, no matter if you brush four times a day, you simply can’t do the job we can do, with our experience and specialized instruments.

You significantly increase your chances of gum disease

There are many potential causes of gum disease, including simply having a genetic disposition to getting it. However, being more likely to get it doesn’t mean you will get it, and being less likely to get it doesn’t mean you won’t. Regular cleanings are instrumental in getting rid of the bacteria that can lead to gum disease. If you do have gum disease form, we can take care of it before it advances to the more serious periodontal disease.

There are many ways we can treat gum disease if we find it early enough. Unfortunately, if it isn’t found until it’s in its advanced stages, then we could be looking at more serious solutions. They could include root canals, surgeries, and even having the tooth removed altogether.

Your chance of other diseases goes up as well

If you think that gum disease is the only disease your dentist can treat, then you’re in for a rude awakening. If your teeth and gums are in poor quality, then your chances of developing cardiovascular disease is much higher. This can lead to life-changing things like heart attacks and strokes. In the worst-case scenario, they can lead to death.

Don’t get scared – get active

We don’t tell you this to scare you. At California Dental Group, we simply want everyone to know what they’re really facing. Skipping a dentist appointment, or not making one at all, could have a serious detrimental effect on your entire health.

Remember that no matter what type of dental issues you’re dealing with today, they’re not going to get better on their own. In fact, if you’re worried about your oral health, remember that it’s never going to get easier or cheaper to fix what ails you than it is today. Reach out to California Dental Group at (800) 407-0161 right away to schedule your appointment.
