Oral Health Leads to Gut Health

March 7, 2019

Oral Health Leads to Gut HealthWhen thinking of ways to promote gut health, we usually think of using probiotics, eating a balanced diet, or keeping hydrated.  Oral health probably did not even cross your mind.   But the fact is oral health is very important in maintaining a healthy gut.  Keep in mind, everything that goes through the digestive system starts from the mouth.  Recognizing the link between your mouth and gut can help you better understand how oral health can lead to having gut health.

The Oral and Gut Microbiomes

The mouth and gut has a microbial community called the “microbiome,” which is a balance of over 300-700 different types of good and bad bacteria that normally live in our mouth and gut. It has only been recent that the importance of the oral microbiome, and the role oral microbes plays in the digestive system is better understood. The mouth is the starting point for the digestive track; therefore the oral microbiome aids in establishing the gut microbiome – even though the gut microbiome is still unique.

A healthy oral microbiome can bring oxygen to the gum and help take away waste products.  If there is an overgrowth of bad bacteria in the mouth, issues such as gingivitis, gum recession, and bleeding gums can arise.  The imbalance of the good and bad bacteria in the mouth ultimately affects and alters the gut microbiome. A healthy gut microbiome generally supports food break down for easy nutrient absorption and protects the body from dangerous bacteria.  Neglecting your oral health can cause a variety of gut issues, like inflammatory bowel disease.

Ways to Keep a Healthy Mouth for a Healthy Gut

The oral microbiome can change according to your diet, how much water you drink, and use of different oral hygiene products. If possible, avoid toothpastes that contain antibacterial ingredients such as triclosan, to keep the balance of healthy bacteria in the mouth.  Stay away from sugar because the bad bacteria thrive on sugar; use substitute sweeteners like xylitol instead.  Select and eat more vegetables and fruits to establish good bacteria.  Simple flossing and regular toothbrushing can help promote a healthy oral microbiome by removing excess food and debris.  Remember to have regular dental checkups and cleanings to help maintain a healthy mouth.  Having good oral health can lead to a healthy gut, and is a sign of a healthy digestive system.
