Our New iTero Scanner Helps Us Serve Patients Better

March 12, 2014

We’ve invested in a new tool to improve patient outcomes in orthodontics, restorations, and dental implants

iTeroAt California Dental Group, we are constantly on the lookout for new technology that can improve the care our patients receive. We recently acquired new iTero intra oral digital scanning equipment. This technology supports our efforts to provide restorative and orthodontic treatments in the fastest, most comfortable, and most satisfying manner possible.

What is iTero?

The iTero intral oral digital scanner is a tool used to generate a 3D model of a patient’s teeth for the purposes of creating a treatment plan and/or generating crowns, bridges, veneers, and other restorative devices. The process is very simple and comfortable for the patient. All you have to do is rest comfortably while a dental technician passes a slim scanning wand over your teeth. The wand will capture a complete image of your entire tooth and transmit it into the computer. This process is far superior to the old-fashioned method of taking impressions of teeth, both in terms of quality and comfort. The digital scan generates highly detailed information, makes it available for immediate use, and saves patients from the bulky, gag-inducing trays and odd-tasting compounds typically used for impressions.

Benefits for Restorations and Dental Implants

Adopting the iTero scanning technology will help our restorative and dental implant patients in several important ways. First of all, in over 99 percent of cases, we can create an excellent 3D image of the teeth on the very first try. This is a big benefit over traditional impressions, which may need to be remade in order to create an accurate model of the teeth. Secondly, we can send highly precise data about the shape and size of the necessary crown or bridge straight from the computer to our crown provider. This helps ensure that our patients will get the highest-quality prosthetics for their crowns, bridges, and dental implants. Finally, because the prosthetics are designed and created with such precision, our dentists can seat them quickly and easily, reducing the average seating appointment from 30 minutes to 20 minutes.

Benefits for Invisalign and Orthodontic Treatment

The iTero scanner also comes with technology that can assist with the creation and execution of orthodontic treatment plans. Dentists can use an Outcome Simulator built into the technology to show patients the improvements they can expect to see in their smiles after treatment. Plus, the iTero system offers exclusive integration with Invisalign orthodontics. This means that dentists can instantly transmit scans of patients’ teeth to the lab creating the Invisalign trays, making Invisalign Clincheck Setups go 50 percent faster. The high-res 3D images of the teeth also result in a better fit for the trays, with one study finding seven times fewer fit issues with iTero than with traditional impressions.
