When You Need a Root Canal

June 4, 2014

Root CanalRoot canals are notorious for being painful and a terrifying experience, but the reality is that new dental technology has made them fairly painless and quick to perform. Although severe tooth pain can be a sign that you need a root canal, it’s important to be examined by a dentist before you begin to worry that endodontic treatment may be necessary. Teeth are made up of several intricate pieces, and a root canal is necessary when the tooth becomes infected.

Millions of American every year have root canals performed, so you should never feel as if you are alone. Understanding root canals starts with a basic understanding of the anatomy of the tooth.

Anatomy of a Tooth

Root canals, or endodontic treatments, treat the inside of the tooth. When the pulp (inside) of the tooth becomes inflamed or infected, a root canal may be necessary. This infection can be caused by several things, including:

  • Repeat dental procedures on the same tooth
  • Faulty crowns
  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Trauma
  • Deep decay

When infection or inflammation of the pulp is left untreated for long periods of time, serious pain or an abscess can be the result. At this point, a root canal may be necessary.

Saving Your Teeth

Endodontic treatment can save a tooth once is it infected. During the treatment, the pulp is removed and the interior of the tooth is very carefully disinfected and cleaned. Once the cleaning is complete, a rubber-like substance is used to fill and seal the tooth. At this point, the dentist will use a crown or a filling to restore the tooth and protect it from future infection. Once the tooth is restored, it will be just like any other tooth.

Advantages of Root Canals

Endodontic treatment in the form of a root canal has the following benefits:

  • Restoration of efficient chewing
  • Improved natural appearance
  • Protection of other teeth from strain or excessive wear
  • Return to normal sensation and biting force

After a root canal, your tooth should work similarly to how a natural tooth would function. This type of endodontic treatment functions by maintaining your natural smile and allows you to continue to eat the foods you love while you undergo treatment. Root canals also ensure that your teeth will last for longer periods of time with no problems.
