Looking to Boost Your Oral Health? You May Want to Avoid These Foods

We have told our patients about some foods that can help them improve their oral health. It is important to also remember that there are foods that can result in poorer oral health. Keep reading to learn what they are and if you decide it is time for you to see your dentist for a cleaning and exam, contact California Dental Group at (800) 407-0161 and we will get you set up.

Avoid sour candies

Of course, you know that sugar is an issue. It is unlikely that many people in the United States are unware of the problems that sugar can cause for the teeth – and the body in general. We are not going to get into that – we are going to get into one of the worst of all sugary treats, sour candies. Not only do they have a ton of sugar but they are also sticky.

As a result, they stick to the surface of the teeth and can continue causing damage for hours after they are eaten. They are also acid, which means they can eat away at the enamel on your teeth. If you really want something sweet, grab a piece of chocolate rather than a sour candy.

Skip the bread

Who doesn’t love bread? It is one of the hardest things for a person to stop eating and it is often included in every meal a person eats. Unfortunately, it is not a great thing for your teeth. As you chew it, your teeth break down the bread and turn it from starch into sugar. In essence, eating a slice of white bread is not much better for your teeth than eating a teaspoon of sugar. If you must eat bread, consider switching to whole wheat for a much lower impact.

Stop chewing ice

It seems innocent enough but chewing ice can actually damage your teeth. Over time, crunching on something that hard can wear down the enamel on your teeth. It’s certainly fine to order ice in your drink if the purpose is to cool the drink, but you should not chew it. Doing so can result in broken, chipped, and cracked teeth.

Citrus can be bad for your teeth

When it comes to helping your teeth, all fruits are not created equal. Apples are great for your teeth and many people chew them after a meal if they cannot get to a bathroom to brush their teeth. However, citrus fruits are full of sugar and acid. Acid is truly one of the biggest villains against your teeth because they can wear away at the enamel of your teeth and make your teeth weaker. Citrus fruits are actually very good for the body, because they have tons of vitamins, but you should rinse, floss, and brush after eating them.
