Healthy Teeth Start at Home: 5 Tips to Pack a Healthy Lunch for Your Kids

Most parents know that they need to encourage their children to brush and floss from an early age. They know that they should bring their child in for a dental cleaning and exam twice a year. What may parents don’t realize is that while those are both important steps, it’s also important to watch what your child eats on a regular basis.

If you regularly pack your child’s lunch, then you’re likely doing so because it’s more affordable and it’s healthier than what your child could get at school. But how much sugar are you packing into that lunch? At California Dental Group, we’ve provided five tips to help you improve the health of your child’s lunch. After you’ve read it, make sure you give us a call at (800) 407-0161 if it’s been more than six months since your child’s most recent dental exam.

  1. Skip the applesauce
  2. Applesauce can seem like such a great idea. It’s portable, it’s practical, and it’s made from fruit, right? Unfortunately, no. Most applesauce cups you find are going to be loaded with added sugars. Even natural cups will have plenty of natural sugars. Instead, add a small cup of cottage cheese. Don’t think your kids will like it? Throw in some strawberries and blueberries and you may be surprised!

  3. Stick to real fruit
  4. Fruit snacks seem like a good alternative but once again they have tons of sugar. Not only that, but they can stick in and between teeth, which encourages plaque to grow. Instead, give them a banana, strawberries, or apples. Short for time? Consider no-prep choices like oranges or grapes.

  5. Keep the milk claim
  6. Milk is a great way to get calcium, which is important for healthy teeth. However, when you add chocolate, strawberry, or other flavorings, you’re also adding sugar that can lead to decay. Instead, stick to plain milk. If your kids object, try dropping in some food coloring to make it more fun. If they still don’t want to drink plain milk, try other dairy options like string cheese.

  7. Starches aren’t a great alternative to sweets
  8. It may seem like the chips, crackers, pretzels, and other salty snacks are better options too, because they’re generally low in sugar, but remember that starches can be just as bad as sugar for the teeth. Why? Because they break down into a sticky goo, which can cling to the teeth and contribute to cavities. There are plenty of crunchy alternatives like baby carrots or nuts.

  9. Colorful veggies can make a difference
  10. Studies have shown that the more appealing their food looks, the more likely a child will be to eat it. Find a wide range of colors for your veggies, which not only looks more appealing but will contain a greater variety of minerals and vitamins.
