Does Your Grocery List Need a Teeth-Healthy Makeover?

When you go to the grocery store, what are your main concerns? If you’re like many Californians, you’re looking for foods that are affordable and healthy. But do you think about how foods are for your teeth? At California Dental Group, we encourage our clients to follow home oral health techniques that include brushing and flossing, but we also want you to remember that it’s just as important to watch what you eat.

We’re certainly not suggesting that our clients never treat themselves to a snack or special treat but we do encourage them to be aware of what’s hiding in their pantry and fridge that may be less than healthy for their teeth and gums. Here are a few of the most common offenders that many people don’t realize are even an issue for their teeth.

Replace your chocolate milk

It’s true that milk is an important part of the diet – especially for kids. The calcium it’s filled with is great for your teeth and for the bones in your jaw. If you get plenty of calcium, your chances of getting gum disease will also be lower than it would be if you weren’t getting enough calcium. However, we must encourage you not to reduce how healthy milk is by choosing chocolate or other sugar-heavy flavors. Stick with plain milk – and of course, always brush afterwards!

Replace juices

Water is a great choice when you’re thirsty. In fact, it’s the best choice. You can mix it up by using sparkling water or still, or just tap water out of your faucet. Many families have plenty of juice on hand, and while it can taste good, it’s not particularly healthy. There’s tons of sugar in there, not to mention empty calories, and juices are acidic.

On the other hand, water does a better job of keeping you hydrated and is free from any sugar or calories. It can also encourage saliva production, which helps you rinse away food and bacteria from your mouth. If you have fluoride in your tap water, then you’ll get even more benefits, as fluoride helps keep teeth enamel strong.

Replace ice cream

If you want something sweet and creamy, stick to yogurt. You can even make your own with just a few ingredients. We recommend plain yogurt that you add whole fruits to. However, even if you add honey or other added sugars, it’s going to be better for your teeth than ice cream. If you really want that frozen treat, consider frozen yogurt instead.

Replace chips

Many people are surprised by just how satisfying crunchy veggies like cucumbers can be. They can provide the crunch you’re looking for when you turn to chips, but they don’t have all that added starch that can stick to teeth and lead to decay. Veggies are also chock full of vitamins that strengthen your teeth – not to mention fiber.

These are just a few tips to help you create a pantry and fridge that are healthy for your teeth and gums. Do you have questions – or are you ready to schedule a teeth cleaning and exam? Reach out to California Dental Group at (800) 407-0161 today!
