Follow These Five Tips if You Want to Improve Your Breath on a Daily Basis

No one wants to have bad breath, yet we have all known someone who has it. If you have ever smelled someone’s bad breath and wondered, “How do they not know?” then you might realize that it could be! To prevent bad breath, follow these five rules. Remember to get regular dental cleanings and exams with California Dental Group by calling us at (800) 407-0161 to set up an appointment.

1. Brush and Floss Your Teeth

You know you should brush and floss, yet many people do not do it. Ideally, you will brush your teeth at least twice each day for at least two minutes. You should also be flossing daily. Doing so gets rid of food particles that would otherwise get stuck in your teeth to rot and decay, which can cause very bad breath indeed.

2. Brush Your Gums and Tongue

If you are only brushing your teeth and gums then you are not correctly completing at-home oral health care. Your gums and tongue can pick up bacteria. Brushing is the best way to get rid of it – plus it is a great option to help freshen your breath.

3. Make Sure You Are Drinking Plenty of Water

There are many reasons it is wise to make sure you are drinking enough water, including the prevention of bad breath. When you become dehydrated, your body stops producing as much saliva as it should. This is an issue because one of the many jobs of saliva is to naturally clean your mouth. When you have less saliva, you have more bacteria – and the more bacteria you have, the more your breath will stink.

4. Reduce Your Coffee Intake

It can be hard to step away from the coffee if you are used to having several cups per day, but if you have too much of it, it can cause an issue. You have likely smelled someone with coffee breath: it smells stale and unpleasant. It can also cause staining to your teeth if you drink too much of it. These are just two of the reasons that it might be wise to lower your coffee consumption.

5. Be Careful of What You Eat

You likely know that onions and garlic can cause bad breath, but did you know that the smell is not actually coming from your mouth but from your lungs? These and other certain stinky substances are absorbed and then breathed out. This is why simply taking a breath mint after eating them cannot get rid of the stink.

Instead of trying to get rid of the smell, try avoiding these strong-smelling foods if you know you are going to need fresh breath for a particular reason. You should also consider that healthful diets are associated with better health and better health means better breath.
