Do You Believe These Myths About Children’s Teeth?

November 16, 2016

Do You Believe These Myths About Children’s Teeth? Of course you’ve stopped believing in the tooth fairy, but do you believe these other common myths about children’s dental care? For example, many people believe that giving their kids an aspirin for a toothache is a good idea but it can actually burn their gums. This just one myth people believe. Below are a few more but we recommend that you call California Dental Group at (800) 407-0161 any time you have questions about your child’s dental health.

Myth:  Fruit juices are good for kids

Moderation is a great thing to teach children and it applies to so many things in their lives – including fruit juice. You do want your child to understand the importance of a healthy diet, and certainly fruit and veggies are likely to be a part of that healthy diet. That said, just like you wouldn’t want your child to drink four or five sodas a day, you should watch their consumption of fruit juice. Why? Because it contains a ton of sugar – which can make tooth decay much more likely for them.

Myth:  Kids can’t get gum disease

As an adult, you likely know that gum disease is one of the worst dental complications you can get but did you know that kids can get it too? Yes, many parents assume that their kids don’t need to worry about gum disease until they’re an adult, but if they’re not following the right oral hygiene habits, they could indeed be at risk for gum disease. That said, cavities and tooth decay are much larger problems for kids. Either way, regular cleanings are important.

Myth:  It’s not necessary for kids to visit the dentist

This is one we see all the time! Many parents believe that because their child’s baby teeth aren’t permanent, and because they’re going to fall out eventually, they don’t need to be taken care of. That’s simply not true. Not only can a child get decay in their teeth, but their teeth can become infected – which will affect how their permanent teeth grow in.

If you’re one of the parents who believe that your kids don’t need to visit the dentist until their permanent teeth grow in, then the professionals at California Dental Group hope that this article has made it clear that your kids do need to visit the dentist. Putting off their first visit to the dentist could result in some serious consequences, if your child has oral health issues, including tooth extraction and even jaw surgery.

Now is a good time to call us at (800) 407-0161 to set your appointment. We look forward to teaching your child that the dentist is here to help them. Remember that the sooner they learn positive associations with the dentist, the better their adult relationship with the dentist will be.
