Afraid to Visit the Dentist? Not Visiting is Much Scarier.

July 17, 2015

Preventative dental care helps to prevent many serious dental problems.

Afraid to Visit the Dentist? Not Visiting is Much Scarier.Let’s face it—few people actually look forward to visiting the dentist, but they manage to motivate themselves to keep up with their routine cleanings anyway. But for some people the prospect of a session in the dentist’s chair is so frightening that they avoid treatment altogether.

It is very important to understand that the longer you put off visiting the dentist for routine dental care, the more likely you are to develop serious dental problems. Some of these problems should actually scare you far more than a visit to a caring dentist from California Dental Group!

Let’s take a look at some problems which afflict individuals who don’t take proper care of their teeth:

Cavities: If you have a dread of the dentist’s drill, you do not want to get a cavity. But by avoiding your routine cleanings and exams, you are actually making it more likely that you will develop a cavity and have to go under the drill to get a filling.

Gum Disease: While most minor cases of gum disease can be handled at home, if you are among the estimated 47 percent of Americans age 30 or over with chronic periodontitis (gum disease), you need professional help to conquer the infection. If you do not get this help due to a fear of the dentist, your gum disease may progress to the point where you need a root canal or even actually lose a tooth. Gum disease has also been associated with serious health problems such as Alzheimer’s.

Tooth Loss: If left untreated, tooth decay and gum disease can progress to the point where you actually start losing your teeth. Considering the impact missing teeth can have on your appearance, your self-confidence, and even your nutrition, tooth loss should definitely scare you more than visiting the dentist for routine care.

Oral Cancer: Of course oral cancer is not caused by skipping your dental visits. But, if you don’t get an exam from a qualified dentist every year, any cancer that does develop could grow undetected for a long period of time before you notice any symptoms. If not caught early with proper oral cancer screenings, oral cancer can be deadly.
