Your Three Must-Follow Home Oral Health Care Steps

There are many at-home oral health care steps that you can follow to get the best possible oral health. However, at California Dental Group we strongly suggest that you follow at least these three steps: Brushing, flossing, setting up regular check-ups with your dentist. Doing just these three things can significantly reduce the chance of decay, infection, and gum disease. Keep reading to learn more and then contact us at (800) 407-0161 if you would like to schedule an appointment.

  1. Brushing
  2. It would be hard to find anyone surprised by this: The most important thing you can do for your teeth is to brush them on a regular basis. Not only is it the most basic example but it is the most impactful. Your teeth come into contact with threats all day: Plaque, bacteria, staining liquids and foods. Brushing your teeth on a regular basis is the best line of defense you have against these issues.

Brushing your teeth gets rid of the buildup these threats can cause. You can reduce your chance of getting a cavity, get fresh breath, and reduce the chance of surface stains all by brushing your teeth on a regular basis. It is truly the foundation of good oral care.

  3. Flossing
  4. Once again, this is not likely a surprise to anyone but it is important. Flossing is important for all the same reasons that brushing is, and more. It gets into the spaces in your mouth that you cannot reach with a typical toothbrush. Flossing removes food and bacteria that are caught between your teeth and your gumline. It is just as important to floss regularly as it is to brush regularly.

One of the issues we find is that people find flossing to be uncomfortable when they first start. This can cause slight pain, bleeding gums, and swelling. This is only because you may already have gingivitis – which is a form of mild gum disease. If you continue to floss it will get less painful, less inflamed, and the bleeding should stop. If it does not, then it is time to see your dentist.

  5. Regular Dental Visits
  6. Going to the dentist may not seem like a home oral health care step but you will be calling to make your appointment from home. Seeing us at least every six months is an essential part of your regular oral care. When you see us regularly, we are able to prevent minor issues turning into expensive and painful procedures.

If it has been more than six months since your last dental visit then we recommend you contact California Dental Group at (800) 407-0161 at your earliest convenience.
