The Truth About Plaque Buildup: Learn Why and How it Builds Up and What You Can Do About It

What is Plaque?

First, let us consider what plaque actually is. It is a sticky film that can build up on your teeth. It is made up of millions of bacteria, and if the plaque is not cleaned off it can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and even tooth loss. This is why it is important to prevent it from building up at all, and to visit your doctor to have it removed.

The Most Common Cause of Plaque is Poor Healthcare

The fact of the matter is that there is one cause of plaque buildup that is more common than others and that is poor healthcare. This is why we recommend brushing twice daily and flossing at least once per day. This can help prevent plaque from growing at all, and, if plaque does occur, brushing and flossing can prevent that plaque from turning into tartar.

Remember that while plaque is relatively easy to remove, tartar is very difficult to get rid of and only your dentist can do so. If tartar is allowed to buildup, it can lead to red, inflamed gums and eventually gum disease. While everyone will have some amount of tartar, the more you have the more likely you are to experience negative side effects.

Specific Foods Can Increase Plaque Buildup

The easiest way to classify foods that can result in plaque buildup is to think about how sticky they are. The stickier they are, and the more they cling to your teeth, the more likely they are to cause plaque buildup. This includes supposedly healthy items like granola bars, as well as sticky candy and other sugary foods. It can also include starchy foods. This does not mean you cannot eat these foods but rather that you should be sure to brush your teeth within a half-hour of doing so.
