In the News: Is Flossing Really Helpful for Oral Health?

If you’ve been following the news then you likely saw a story that claimed that flossing isn’t necessary. This came after a well-respected dental school studied flossing for over a decade. At California Dental Group we found the study interesting and there is new information in it – but we want to be clear with our patients about exactly what flossing can and can’t do when you make it part of your daily routine.

The many benefits of flossing

The truth is – and always has been – that flossing isn’t a magical cure-all for all your oral health issues. That said, it does have many benefits. Most notably to most people, it can both prevent and cure gingivitis. As you may or may not know, gingivitis is a mild form of gun disease that can bring bad breath and other issues.

The main symptoms of gingivitis are gums that are red and swollen and that bleed when you brush or floss them. When you floss regularly, you’re able to reduce gum inflammation. That’s why gums that aren’t used to being flossed will bleed initially but will no longer bleed if you begin to floss regularly.

Not treating gingivitis can lead to periodontitis, which is a more serious form of gum disease that can lead to significant issues including the loss of teeth and bone loss.

Flossing can also help dislodge pieces of food and debris that get stuck between your teeth and aren’t removed with tooth brushing alone. We’re talking about the food particles located both between your teeth and under your gum line. Getting rid of this food is both helpful because no one wants unsightly debris between their teeth, but also because if it’s not removed it can become food for bacteria and lead to cavities.

Make sure you’re using the right technique to floss

At California Dental Group, we’ve talked about the right technique for flossing in several past blogs and we’re also happy to show you at your next dental cleaning. Essentially, avoid flossing too hard and be sure to following the guidelines we set out for you.

The limits of flossing

While flossing can help reverse gingivitis, it can’t turn back time and get rid of periodontitis once it’s gotten into your gum tissues. Note that symptoms of periodontitis include bad breath, a constant bad taste in the mouth, receding gums, pus coming from the gums, loose teeth, tender gums that bleed, and painful chewing. If you’ve noticed these symptoms then it’s time to call California Dental Group at (800) 407-0161 right away. Your daily hygiene isn’t going to fix those problems but our experienced staff can.
