The specifics of dental crowns

When you get down to it, a dental crown is essentially a hollow restoration that’s shaped like your tooth. In fact, it’s specifically crafted for your unique tooth. The purpose is to both improve the function of your tooth and to restore its appearance. In some cases, we may also use it to prevent your tooth from experiencing further damage.

Common reasons people get dental crowns

Our patients choose dental crowns in a variety of situations to treat many different dental issues. One of the most common is a tooth that’s broken, cracked, or otherwise fractured. In some cases they’re completed when a tooth is damaged or weak. If you have an extensive cavity that a filling can’t handle then we may install a crown.

Do you have a tooth that’s misshapen or malformed? Then we may add a crown. If you’ve had a dental implant then a crown may go over it. Finally, if you have a dental bridge then we may use a dental crown to support that bridge. Note that this list doesn’t cover 100% of the reasons you may need a crown but these are the most common.

The process of fitting you for a crown

Every crown is made specifically for the tooth it’s covering. To have them created, we must first create an impression of the tooth it’s going to cover. Before we can do this, we must prepare the tooth so that the crown will fit over it. We don’t create crowns immediately, but we do create a temporary crown that fits over your tooth. It protects it while the permanent crown is being created.

You can choose from different types of crowns

There several different types of crowns and the right one for your issue depends on several factors. Options include ceramic and porcelain. In most cases, we find that ceramic are more popular because it’s easier to more accurately match the color of your teeth. However, metal crowns are often used on back teeth because they’re extremely strong and durable.
