When Do Kids Need to Start Going to the Dentist?

According to the American Dental Association, kids should have their first dental visit by their first birthday. Are Cavities in Baby Teeth Really a Big Deal?

Yes! Although baby teeth will be lost eventually, it is very important to make sure this does not happen early due to tooth decay. Children need to have baby teeth in place so that they can chew and speak properly, and to hold space for the permanent teeth that are coming in under need the baby teeth. If too many baby teeth have been lost to decay, the permanent teeth may drift out of position when they come in, leaving your child in need of orthodontics to correct a crooked smile or a misaligned bite.

How Often Do Kids Need to Visit the Dentist?

It is recommended that kids visit the dentist every 6 months for a dental cleaning and exam.

Does My Child Need Sealants?

If you know that your child doesn’t always brush their teeth as well as they’re supposed to, or if you have a history of cavities in your family, it is a good idea to have sealants applied to your child’s teeth. In fact, any child can benefit from sealants, which cover the chewing surfaces of teeth and help prevent food and bacteria from becoming trapped in the crevices.

What Should I Do If My Child Has a Dental Emergency?

Call your family dentist immediately. If the problem is a toothache or a broken tooth, rinse the tooth with warm salt water and then give your child acetaminophen for the pain. If the problem is a knocked out permanent tooth, try to find the tooth, rinse it off, then insert it back into the socket. If it won’t fit in the socket, place it in a glass of milk and take it to the dentist.
