Importance of a Regular Dental Check up

Going to see your dentist can be a nuance and you might not think it is important. You probably already know that everywhere you look it is recommended to visit a dentist every 6 months or at least twice a year for a routine checkup and cleaning. You already think you are doing your part by at least brushing your teeth twice and flossing your teeth once, every single day. But the fact of the matter is that brushing and flossing daily is not enough. It is important for you and your family to keep regular routine visits to the dental office at least twice a year.

Why are regular dental visits important?

Having a regular and routine dental office visit with your dentist is very important. A regular dental visit is vital because it helps keep your teeth and gums healthy. During the dental visit, your dental professional will check your overall oral health for any problem areas. Your dentist will look for any signs or symptoms in your mouth and on your teeth that may indicate concerns. Identifying any issues before they become serious can enable your dentist to pre-emptively treat any problems before they affect your health and appearance.

What to expect at your routine dental visit?

At your routine dental visit, you should expect two parts. Your dentist and the dental professionals will perform a dental checkup and a cleaning. The dental checkup will consist of checking the overall oral health. The dentist will exam your teeth and gums for any signs of concerns. They will check for presence of cavities. X-rays may even be taken to detect cavities between your teeth. The exam also includes checking for plaque and tartar on your teeth. Plaque is a sticky layer on the teeth that contains bacteria, that if not removed can become hardened and lead to tartar. Once plaque turns into tartar, it cannot be removed by brushing and flossing and may lead to oral disease. Your gums will also be checked with a special tool to measure the depth of the separation between your teeth and gums. With gum diseases, the spaces between the gums and teeth may become deeper. The checkup should also include an examination of your tongue, throat, face, head, and neck for signs of swelling, redness, or possible signs of cancer.

During the cleaning, your dentist and dental professional will remove any plaque and tartar buildup. Your teeth will be cleaned by scaling with the use of a special tool to remove the tartar. Your dental professional may also polish your teeth to improve the appearance. Usually a gritty paste is used to polish your teeth to help remove any surface stains on your teeth. The areas between your teeth are then cleaned by flossing.
