If You Are Skipping Your Dental Cleanings You Are Risking Three Major Issues

It may not seem like a big deal to miss one or two dental cleanings. Unfortunately, it can actually be a much larger issue than you may realize. Keep reading to find out about three serious issues you are risking by not getting regular cleanings and checkups. If you are overdue for a cleaning, contact California Dental Group at (800) 407-0161.

1. Plaque and Tartar Attack

When you do not have your teeth cleaned regularly, plaque and tartar are very likely to build up. Plaque is that film-like substance that can make your teeth feel dirty and fuzzy and look dull. As time goes on, that plaque can harden and turn into tartar. Once this happens, the only way to get rid of it is by scraping it off with dental tools.

Brushing cannot get rid of tartar. Part of a regular visit to your dentist is removing plaque and tartar from your teeth. No matter how well you brush and floss, you may be able to prevent much of the plaque and tartar buildup but you are unlikely to be able to avoid it all.

2. Decay

Tooth decay happens for many reasons. If you are not brushing and flossing as regularly as you should, then you are risking decay. Some people have a better chance of tooth decay due to their genetics or the things they eat. For example, foods high in sugar and carbohydrates can encourage tooth decay. During your regular exam and cleaning, your dentist will check your teeth for signs of decay.

Dentists may be able to find the decay before it ever causes you any pain. Remember that decay is progressive and it does not stop once it starts unless there is an intervention. The best way to prevent decay or, if you do experience decay, prevent it from becoming a serious problem and causing widespread damage, is to visit your dentist regularly.

3. Gum Disease

Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease, when minor, has symptoms such as red, inflamed gums that bleed when you brush or floss. More serious versions of gum disease can include symptoms like pain, gums separating from teeth, and receding gums. If it is caught while it is mild, gum disease can generally be cured and reversed by simply changing your oral care habits.

However, if you skip the dentist and gum disease is not caught until it becomes severe, then you will be facing much more expensive, painful, and difficult treatment. If we catch it before it has become truly extreme, we can likely treat it but when left too long it can result in tooth loss.

These are just a few of the reasons that you should not skip your regular visit with a dentist. Contact California Dental Group at (800) 407-0161 now to schedule your appointment.
