What is a cavity?

Cavity Prevention Strategies

A cavity is a permanent damaged area on the hard surfaces of teeth that develop into tiny holes or openings. Cavities are also called tooth decay or caries. Cavities are caused by bacteria in the mouth that convert plaque to acid. Cavities can be repaired with composite fillings. If cavities are left untreated, the damages to the tooth enamel worsens leading to severe toothache, infection, and loss of teeth.

Ways to avoid cavities

  1. Brush and floss your teeth daily. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing your teeth daily can help remove food particles and remove plaque that can lead to tooth decay.
  2. Use a fluoride toothpaste. Using a toothpaste with fluoride can also help prevent tooth decay, since the fluoride can help strength your teeth.
  3. Rinse your mouth. Rinsing your mouth with a mouth wash can remove food particles and reduce the risk of developing cavities.
  4. Visit your dentist regularly. Having your teeth professionally cleaned and examined can help prevent issues with cavities. Your dentist will be able to spot problems early on before they become serious.
  5. Drink tap water. Drinking public water supplies can help reduce tooth decay significantly, since most have added fluoride.
  6. Eat healthy foods. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables can help wash away food particles. Additionally, choosing unsweetened coffee or tea, and drinking water can limit the sugar in your drink and reduce tooth decay.
  7. Avoid frequent snacking and sipping. When you eat or drink, the mouth bacteria create acids that can destroy tooth enamel. Snacking and drinking throughout the day will inflict the teeth all day long.
  8. Consider fluoride treatments. Getting periodic fluoride treatments from your dentist can be helpful. A custom tray for your teeth is made and a prescription fluoride teeth is applied to reduce the risk of tooth decay.
  9. Chewing sugar free gum. Chewing xylitol based gum can assist in reducing the risk of cavities.
  10. Ask about dental sealants. Consider a dental sealant for all school aged children. A sealant is a protective plastic coating applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth. The sealant seals off the grooves and crannies that tend to collect food, protecting tooth enamel from plaque and acid.
