Caring For Your Teeth As You Age

Caring For Your Teeth As You Age

There are many changes to your teeth and mouth as you age. As you get older, it is even more important to take good care of your dental health. Many people think that losing teeth is unavoidable in old age, however it’s not true. If you care for your teeth properly, your teeth will last a lifetime.

Dental and oral changes

Aging can cause tooth enamel to be worn down due to all the chewing, biting, and grinding of the food we eat. The nerves in your teeth can also become smaller and make your teeth more sensitive to cavities and other dental issues. Gums can also recede as you become older. The gum tissue tends to pull away from the tooth to expose the base, or root, of the tooth. This makes it easier for bacteria to build up and cause inflammation leading to tooth decay. Brushing too hard throughout the years usually causes receding gums. As you age, saliva production can decrease leading to more dry mouths. Saliva protects teeth from decay and help your gums stay healthy. Not enough saliva can lead to problems with tasting, chewing, and swallowing, mouth sores, gum disease and tooth decay, and yeast infection in the mouth. Dry mouth can be cause by additional contributing factors, such as medications or other co-morbid health conditions like diabetes.

Tips for your oral health

It does not matter your age, proper dental and oral care is essential to strong teeth and gums. Here are some tips to maintain and improve your oral health.

  • Use a soft-bristle toothbrush to brush at least twice daily.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste to help reduce tooth decay.
  • Remember to floss daily to remove food debris and plaque between teeth.
  • If you wear dentures, remember to clean them daily and remove them at night.
  • Stop smoking, if you smoke, to reduce the chances of oral cancer.
  • Eat a healthy diet and avoid sweet sugary snacks and beverages.
  • Drink tap water, since most contains fluoride to help prevent tooth decay and loss.
  • Call your doctor if you notice any tooth pain, red or swollen gums, dry mouth, white or red patches in your mouth, loose teeth, or poor-fitting dentures.
  • Keep your regular visit with your dentist for routine check and cleaning.

Making smart choices about your diet and dental care as you age will help your teeth last a long time, whether it is your natural teeth or wear implants and dentures.
