3 Ways to Help Your Kid Fight Plaque and Have a Healthier Smile

As a parent, you want your child to have a happy, healthy smile. The truth is that plaque is simply inevitable. That said, this doesn’t mean that you can’t greatly reduce the harm it does to your child’s teeth. We want to ensure that your kids are as healthy as possible, which is why were’ here to offer three tips to help your kids fight plaque. If you have questions, or you want to make an appointment with a family dentist, contact California Dental Group at (800) 407-0161.

  1. Help your child maintain a healthy diet
  2. Children are more susceptible to plaque than adults in large part due to the fact that they often have much more sugar in their diet. They also often eat more snacks between meals compared to adults. Just making small changes to your child’s diet can have a big impact on how much plaque they have.

You’ll find lots of snacks at the store that don’t have sugar and it’s likely that your child will like at least one of them. Consider options like fruits, cheeses, yogurts, and fresh veggies. Celery in particular actually helps get food out of the teeth and encourages saliva, which then counteracts acids that lead to plaque buildup.

  3. Teach your child to brush and floss correctly
  4. Of course, this is the most obvious option but it’s very important. You should encourage your child to brush two or three times a day and floss at least once. Make sure that they’re brushing for a full two to three minutes and get them a fun timer if need be. Once your kids are in the habit of a healthy home oral care regiment, they’ll be more likely to continue it into adulthood – plus their gums are more likely to be free from plaque.

  5. Take your child to the dentist
  6. One thing that you should always remember is that even if you convince your child to brush their teeth three times a day for three minutes and they floss daily, they are still going to need to visit the dentist every six months. When they come see California Dental Group, we can offer deep cleaning and a through exam to ensure that their gums and teeth are in in good health. If there are any issues, we can take care of them as soon as possible. Finally, we can also use our special professional-grade instruments to get rid of any plaque.
